Editorial Standards

Purpose of the catalogue

The ALWAK Public Domain Literature Library exists to provide access to historical cookbooks and household manuals that are in the public domain. The catalogue is curated to help readers discover works of cultural, historical, and culinary interest, with editorial notes that offer context without substituting for the original texts.

Scope and selection

The library currently includes 91 books, all sourced from Project Gutenberg. Selection is limited to English-language texts that treat cooking, food, or domestic management. Works were chosen for their representation of different periods, authorship, and themes.

Source attribution

All books are attributed to their original authors, publishers, and Project Gutenberg as the digitizer. No proprietary editions are used. The catalogue does not assert copyright over any text.

Bibliographic records

Each book record includes title, author(s), publisher, keywords, target-reader note, and a catalogue note written by the manuscript reviewer. Keywords are drawn from the original Project Gutenberg metadata. The target-reader field is set to “Readers of public-domain and historical texts” for all entries.

Category assignment

Books are grouped into four categories based on thematic and historical affinities. Category boundaries are approximate; some works could fit multiple categories. The categories are: Historical Cookbooks, Recipes, Home Economics, and Housekeeping.

Editorial reading context

The catalogue notes are written by The catalogue groups works according to its available bibliographic records and subject scope. They are based on reading the works and aim to highlight notable features such as voice, structure, and historical context. They do not constitute a peer-reviewed analysis.

Edition facts and text measurements

When available, the original publication date and edition are noted. Text length is not systematically recorded, but catalogue notes may reference page counts or number of recipes when mentioned in the source.

Recommendations and related works

Each category guide recommends three specific books with a concrete reason for each recommendation. These are editorial suggestions; readers are free to explore all titles.

Corrections and reader reports

We welcome corrections via the contact page at /contact-us. Reports of errors in catalogue notes or metadata will be reviewed by the catalogue project.

Public-domain limitations

Only works that are confirmed public domain in the United States are included. Some works may still be under copyright in other jurisdictions. Users are responsible for verifying local laws.

Pages use semantic HTML and avoid complex layouts. We aim for clear, readable text without graphics or advertisements. The catalogue is designed for screen-reader compatibility.

Independence and editorial responsibility

ALWAK Catalogue serves as the sole manuscript reviewer and editor. The catalogue is independently maintained without institutional or corporate sponsorship.

What the catalogue does not claim

The library does not claim peer review, legal certification, academic affiliation, or professional librarian credentials. It does not guarantee complete copyright status in all countries. No AI or advertising is used.

Ongoing maintenance

The catalogue is updated occasionally as new public-domain works are identified and digitized by Project Gutenberg. Existing records may be revised to improve accuracy.

Bibliographic dates and catalogue measurements

The catalogue distinguishes the Project Gutenberg digital release from a work’s original or first publication. Project Gutenberg is identified as the digital source for the edition available here; its release year is therefore shown as Gutenberg Release Year, not as the work’s original publication year.

When an explicit first-publication or issue date can be supported directly by the title or issue information, it may be shown separately as First Publication Year. When that date cannot be confirmed, the catalogue displays Not confirmed rather than guessing a year.

Where the source text can be measured reliably, the catalogue may provide word count and estimated reading time. These measurements describe reading scope and are not quality rankings.
